Le Monde newspaper said on Sunday that he will announce the end of his 44-year career as a fashion designer. \"On the eve of his 40th anniversary of his house of haute couture, Yves Saint Laurent, 65 years old, is preparing to announce his departure,\" said Le Monde. The paper called him \"something of a last magician, the ultimate pop star.\" Another newspaper, the weekly Le Journal du Dimanche, said on Sunday \"Tomorrow, at noon, a living legend will take his leave.\" The Associated Press called his Paris office seeking confirmation of the reports but the man answering the telephone declined comment and said all queries would have to wait until the following day. Le Journal du Dimanche said Saint Laurent has been at odds with French businessman Francois Pinault of the retail powerhouse Pinault-Printemps-Redoute, who has controled the rights to Saint Laurent\'s brand name since 1999. Pinault purchased the Yves Saint Laurent brand for one billion U-S dollars and merged it with Gucci, its Italian fashion house subsidiary, taking his ready-to-wear line out of his hands.
