In its 11th year, Australian designers did what they did best - beachwear - for the Spring / Summer 06/07 collections. And many designers turned the catwalk into a concert stage in a bid to snare publicity and those all important sales. The 80s proved a popular theme across most shows ton Friday.. Popular surfwear label One Teaspoon got its retro injection with singer Leo Sayer, who resides permanently in Australia, serenading the scantily clad models. Bright prints and sexy barely there on-pieces were the order of the day - as were swimming costumes were worn as streetwear. The collection has just been snapped up by Selfridges and Harrods in the UK and has a huge celebrity following in the US with fans such as Jessica Simpson & Mischa Barton. As always, Australian designers are courting the international buyers - Yasmin Sewell from UK store Browns, said she was looking for that point of difference compared to other fashion weeks around the world. \"I think that I\'\'m looking for something really quite individual, there\'\'s a real easiness to Australian fashion so it\'\'s different to everywhere else in the world, everywhere is different. I\'\'m looking for something that has it\'\'s own point of Aussie point of view, and that usually comes down to being kind of commercial, a little bit of fashion but very easy to wear.\" Earlier this week, organisers of the Australian Fashion festival claimed Sydney was the fourth most important fashion week after Milan, Paris and New York. Meanwhile at the group collection shows, designers resorted to a puff of smoke and some more singing to dress up their collections.
