'Things To Know Before Visiting Medellin Colombia I have been living in Medellin for six years and I have many businesses and properties here. Since I have a quite experience now I wanted to give you some recommendations before you will come to visit this beautiful Colombian country. First thing I would like to mention is the question of security. Obviously, Colombia is an emerging economy so it is not the safest place in the world but it is not at all that dangerous as many believe. I have been living here for quite a long now and nothing bad happened to me. I have never been stolen. However, you should not show off so do not take out your latest model of mobile phone in the public and so on. You should take Uber instead of a taxi from the street. Uber is illegal in Colombia so you should sit at the front seat. The dollar is astronomically high in Colombia so if you want to invest it is a great moment right now or perhaps if you are expats and you earn in dollars, your life will be much cheaper here than in the USA. As for the sim card, I recommend you \"Claro\" which has a great reception all over the country, even in the most remote spots. You can buy a pre-paid card in any shops here. As for the communication, even though Colombia lives out of tourism, there are still many people, especially the elder, that does not know it, so it would be great if you could learn some basic words in Spanish. The Colombian people will appreciate a lot that you are making an effort. You will soon discover that people here are very friendly and open so you will feel incredibly welcomed. If you are planning to go to Amazon area or the Caribbean coast like Cartagena de las Indias, you will need yellow vaccine certificate which you can actually obtain here and you will save a lot of money in comparison to the USA. As for the dress code, for men you should not wear sandals and shorts. I would recommend jeans. Medellin is more lay-back than other parts of Colombia like Bogota where people tends to wear suits more often.
